Hands on training Workshop on Haemorrhoids
A two-day Hands-on Training Workshop on Haemorrhoids was organized by the Department of Shalya Tantra, Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA) as part of the World Piles Day observance. The programme was inaugurated by Prof. (Dr.) Tanuja Nesari, Director, ITRA, in the presence of Dr. Ashok Laddha, MS, FRCS, Dr. Alok M. Gupta, MD (Ayurveda), Dr. R. S. Virani, MS (General Surgery), and Prof. (Dr.) T. S. Dudhamal, HOD, Shalya Tantra, along with the dedicated faculties of the Department of Shalya Tantra. It was an honour to invite and host Dr. Ashok Laddha, who proposed and pioneered the concept of observing World Piles Day globally. During the inaugural session, the Hon’ble Director motivated the scholars, encouraging them to remain enthusiastic and to actively participate throughout the workshop.
Across two days, 20 hands-on anorectal surgeries and 5 colonoscopy procedures were performed. Day 1 included a guest lecture by Dr. Ashok Laddha on SEPTA block, followed by surgical demonstrations of the SEPTA block and hands-on colonoscopy training for the scholars. Day 2 featured an academic lecture by Dr. Alok Gupta on the Chivate procedure, along with hands-on operative demonstrations of the Chivate procedure as well as hands-on colonoscopy training. The day concluded with a panel discussion led by Dr. Alok Gupta, offering further clinical clarity and interactive learning for all participants.
The event highlighted the importance of World Piles Day, emphasizing global awareness about haemorrhoidal disease, timely diagnosis, and the need for skilled, evidence-based management. The workshop provided immense academic and practical value, with all faculties, PhD scholars, postgraduate students, and interns benefitting from exposure to techniques such as the SEPTA block, laser applications in haemorrhoids, advanced anorectal procedures, and colonoscopy—thereby strengthening overall clinical competence within the institute.
